MSC Recreation Program (Rec)

Rec Soccer is for players who want basic skills training and the chance to play games. It involves less commitment than Travel, including fewer practices.

Season Structure

  • Fall: Games and practices begin in August.
  • Spring: Games and practices begin in April.
  • Payment: Paying in the Fall covers both the Fall and Spring seasons. Players stay on the same team for both. Indoor soccer is not included.

Divisions and Team Placement

Most U8 and older Co-ed divisions are boys, but girls can join any Co-ed division. MSC tries to split boys and girls equally so every player has a comfortable place to learn.

Players may play up to two birth years above their own (for example, a U10 may play U12). Register in your birth year, then email registrar@mentorsoccerclub.com to request a transfer to the older division.

Rec has no tryouts, so players are placed without regard to skill level. MSC’s goal is fair, balanced teams. MSC may combine divisions, birth years, and genders when needed, based on sign-ups.

Coaches

Rec coaches are parents, family members, and other volunteers from MSC’s membership. Every Rec team must have a parent volunteer coach. MSC does not provide coaches for Rec teams. No soccer experience is required, but all volunteer coaches must hold a Concussion and Lindsay’s Law certificate. Refunds are not given if a parent does not volunteer.

Practices

Teams should hold practices in the two weeks before the season starts. Coaches may also hold practices during the season.

Games

Games, including make-up games, are played on weeknights and Saturdays at various fields in the City of Mentor. MSC policy is that every player plays at least 50% of each game. A player may choose to sit out when the coach asks them to play.

Tournaments

Rec teams generally do not enter tournaments. Any participation is at the discretion of the coach and parents, and only the families taking part pay.

Volunteers

Mentor Soccer Club is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization, and we always need members to help with required tasks. Without enough volunteers, the club would have to hire help and raise fees substantially.
